What Funders Want You to Know

Nonprofit leaders are navigating tight budgets, rising community needs, and increased expectations for measurable impact. That’s why opportunities to hear directly from funders are invaluable.  Thank you for providing those, CNM!

At a CNM Funders Forum last fall in Fort Worth, community leaders Pete Geren (Sid Richardson Foundation), Adam Powell (United Way Tarrant County), and Jeff Salavarria (Frost Bank) shared practical, candid insights about what helps nonprofits stand out—and succeed—in today’s funding environment.

Whether you attended or not, here are important takeaways to guide your fundraising and partnership strategy.

Relationships Matter More Than Ever. Funders emphasized that funding is a partnership, not a transaction. They want to know you, understand your work, and hear about both your successes and challenges. Inviting funders to events, sharing updates beyond grant cycles, and communicating honestly all help strengthen these relationships.

Be Informed by Data, Not Driven by It. Data and analysis matter, but they are not everything. Funders want to understand the problem you are addressing and how your work creates long-term impact. As one funder shared, think less about the ingredients and more about the cake - the outcome and the people served.

Clarity Wins. Funders stressed the importance of being able to clearly and concisely describe what your organization does. If you can summarize your mission or program in a single sentence, you are more likely to build understanding, trust, and engagement.

Stay Connected.  Our community is a generous one.  To continue learning from funders and nonprofit peers, consider attending upcoming CNM Funders Forums and signing up for the CNM newsletter to receive updates and insights.
